Some frequently asked questions

At Scenic Self Drive Hire, we’re here to ensure your vehicle hire experience is smooth and stress-free. We often get some common questions regarding our services. Hence, we made a list to answer them all.

What identification do I need to hire a vehicle?

To hire a vehicle with us, you’ll need the following identification:

  • Full valid UK driving licence: This must have been held for at least two years.
  • DVLA check code: Obtain this by visiting the DVLA website. Alternatively, your NI number can be used.
  • Two forms of ID: These can include recent utility bills or bank statements (dated within the last three months) that display your name and address matching your licence.
  • Credit or debit card: This must be in the main hirer’s name. If not, the cardholder must be present or sign a card authority form.

How old do I have to be to hire a self-driving vehicle?

You must be between the ages of 21 and 75 and present us with a complete, valid UK driver’s licence that has been held for at least two years. Drivers under the age of 25 must have at least two years of driving experience and a clean driver’s licence. Please note that some vehicle age restrictions may fluctuate depending on the vehicle required.

What type of vehicles can I hire?

With us, you can hire a range of self-driving vehicles, including cars, vans, and minibuses. All our vehicles are properly maintained for long-distance journeys.

How much do I have to pay for deposits?

During the hire time, we request a £250 security deposit from all our customers. We will request a £500 deposit from drivers aged 21 to 24. Europe hires require a £750 deposit, whereas minibus hires require a £500 deposit. To get more information, visit our terms and conditions page.

What happens if I return the vehicle late?

Late returns may incur additional charges. Please notify us if you’ll be delayed.

Is overhead damage covered?

You (the customer) are responsible for the full cost of any overhead damage.

What happens if I need to postpone or cancel my booking?

Any changes to the original booking are subject to a £10 administration fee. This fee also applies to cancellations and postponements. We only allow one delay per booking; if you need to postpone again, the hire will be considered cancelled, and the following cancellation policy will be applied:

  • Up to 48 hours before rental commences – Non-return of deposit.
  • 48 hours to 24 hours – 50% of the total hire charge.
  • 24 hours or no-show – full hire charge.

How many miles are included in the self-hire vehicles?

We provide a free mileage allowance of 150 miles per day or 1000 miles per week for vans and 250 miles per day or 1250 miles per week for minibuses and cars for hire in the UK. For European hire, we provide 1400 miles per week for vans, and 1200 miles for minibuses. For European car hire, the allowance is 300 miles per day or 1500 miles per week. What happens in case of an accident or breakdown?

Unfortunately, accidents can happen at any time. We provide full 24-hour manufacturer breakdown cover at no extra cost. Full contact details are provided with your hirer vehicle, telling you what you need to do if a problem occurs with your vehicle on hire from us.

What are the options for the collection and return of vehicles?

Vehicles are available for pick-up from 8:00am at the agreed location, and we ask that you return your self-drive vehicle by 8:00am on the final day of hire. Late returns can disrupt our schedule, so penalties will apply: a charge of £50 for delays of up to two hours, increasing to a full day’s rental for longer delays.
